104 MILITARY MUSIC AND ITS STORY.
Second Life Guards, says it was the only one in England.
It could not be expected that the idea would remain long a secret. A bandmaster named Macfarlane soon applied two " Russian valves" to an instrument called a " cornopean " (now known as the cornet), which was brought out by Kohler, of London. The instruÂment then became universally adopted by our bands, and entirely superseded the trumpet and key-bugle. It was first introduced into the orchestra by Balfe in " The Maid of Artois" (1836).7 The great world of the people's brass bands had its origin in these days, and Enderby Jackson, the famous brass band organiser, gives the date of the first band of any note, as 1833. This was established by Walker and Hardman, of York. The honour of forming the first brass band is also claimed by one Klussmann, the bandmaster of the Ninth Lancers. |
